“Writer Raymond Chandler is often credited with coining the phrase: ‘throwing up on the page,’” says instructor Rob Williams. “Actually, he said, ‘Throw up into your typewriter every morning. Clean up every noon.’ Though the image might be a little unsettling, the sentiment is in earnest.”
In this class we’ll follow Chandler’s advice. But I’d like to think of it more as throwing IT ALL onto the page, rather than throwing up onto the page. For five weeks we’ll write and write and not worry about cleaning up the mess. We’ll banish the inner critic, lock away the perfectionist, and celebrate the unruly and the unrestrained.
Through weekly in-class writing exercises in a warm, supportive environment, you’ll relax in the freedom of pouring it out onto the page, freeing yourself up from worrying about what you make in your writing so that you can be fully engaged in the process of making it.
Whether you want to write poetry, stories, personal reflections, journal entries, or fragments, we’ll get your pen moving across the page (or fingers tapping across the keyboard). We’ll share our work (optionally, of course) to help each other identify what resonates in our writing.
