“Sometimes we find a story has stagnated or hit a wall,” says instructor Allison Landa. “That’s when it’s time to consider shifting a major element, such as point of view. In fact, shifting to first-person narration can be a particularly powerful method of breaking open a story.”

In this half-day class, we’ll use writing exercises, group discussions, and brief readings to unlock stuck places in work that you’ve already drafted. We'll specifically focus on point of view and the power of first-person to create intimacy and insight. In this safe and encouraging space, we’ll play with first-person narration and even explore giving voice to inanimate objects such as a dog or a wildfire.

Bring to class five pages, double-spaced, of an unfinished draft, story excerpt, or complete story that seems to be missing something. Together we’ll unlock the story by experimenting with first-person point of view.
