“Shorter forms grab us and hold us in their spell, catapulting us into a moment. Every sensory detail is there for a reason, every word matters,” says instructor Katharine Harer. “Flash forms engage readers through hint and suggestion rather than lengthy explanation, sparks of light beckoning us to follow.”
Katharine will share examples of short forms from a diverse group of writers, including Lydia Davis, John Edgar Wideman, Jamaica Kincaid and George Saunders, who illustrate how to build plot, tension and character in a few words. Through in-class reading, discussions, and writing practice, we’ll look at how to deepen a moment of perception, hone our personal voices, and practice the useful art of concision. We’ll pay special attention to sound elements, imagery and the texture of words and learn how to move the action forward without beating around the bush.
“We’ll write during class,” says Katharine, “and I’ll give you optional assignments to try at home designed to jumpstart new flash pieces. Sharing is voluntary and always encouraged – we learn a lot from one another.”
By the end of the three weeks, students will feel comfortable working in these shorter forms and will have created a number of their own pieces, ranging from 500 words to 2-3 pages. Students at all levels and experience with writing are welcome.
