You’re ready to get your work out there. Now what? “The multifaceted publishing world can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be!” says instructor Jennifer Lewis. “This three-hour class will equip writers with the knowledge and practical tools they need to confidently submit their work to contests, literary journals, and small presses.”
For beginning through more experienced writers, this class aims to demystify the sometimes confusing process of getting published while offering real-world insights and inspiration for success. Jennifer will take you through the publishing process from start to finish, including figuring out which journals and presses are right for your work, writing a cover letter and bio, and formatting your manuscript for submission. You’ll learn about various online tools and resources available for organizing and tracking submissions and get quick, hands-on experience with a couple of them. During group discussion, Jennifer will emphasize why it’s important to rack up rejections and she’ll address the vulnerability of submitting work.
Jennifer says, “In addition to winning literary contests and publishing my short story collection with a small press, I’ve worked at a literary journal and run a small press. I’m excited to share the inside scoop from the writer’s side and the publisher’s side.”

Jennifer is amazing. She makes the most of our time together. I have learned so much! She is encouraging, very prepared.
This workshop exceeded my expectations. Jennifer packed a lot of quality content into the three hours. I'm thankful that I decided to sign up. I will definitely be considering more classes through the Salon!
This is the third Jennifer Lewis class I've taken through The Writing Salon - creative nonfiction and short story being the first two - and I could, well, get wordy with my praise of Jennifer's teaching style and ability, but put quite simply - imo she has a true gift for teaching. I will add (can't resist - I'm a writer) that time and again she has impressed me to the point of being kind of blown away with her seemingly innate ability to encourage, praise - quite often with genuine admiration, one writer toward another - and gently but oh so valuably constructively criticize. And all that on the fly. And on Zoom.
Jennifer provided us with a wealth of resources, advice, and encouragement!!
It was phenomenal - honestly the best learning experience I can remember. Beautifully organized and presented, super collegial and unintimidating. I got so much important information, and even better - encouragement.
