About loss, James Joyce famously wrote, “Absence, the highest form of presence.” Absence of any kind—whether loss of a loved one, some physical ability (or facet of the physical body), a home, job, or even a cherished object—can often overwhelm us, rendering us silent. But as writers, we have tools at our disposal with which we can approach these empty spaces—and the empty page. Instructor Kerry Muir says, "Together, we'll cover strategies to remain present, bear witness to the moment, and reclaim the expressive voice."
In this 5-week class, through a series of in-class exercises and optional take-home assignments, students will write about many types of loss and absence. We’ll look at selected readings from authors who deal with absence such as Lilly Dancyger, WG Sebald, and Elizabeth Alexander. As wordsmiths, we’ll use language, setting, character, voice, metaphor, as well as negative space on the page, to move toward transformation and healing.
All levels, all genres welcome.

Kerry's creative writing class is so much more than a writing class--although you do write A LOT and feel the pride of accomplishment at the stack of pages you never thought you'd write. Kerry teaches you to pay attention to the world around you and brings you closer to your own experiences with her curated lessons, fantastic reading materials, and personal feedback. Her gentle, invested care has helped me grow as a writer and as a human.
Kerry created a supportive container where I felt I could easily create new work and share my writing. She offered unique and creative class material that gave us a lot to work with and provided an easy entry point into our writing practice. She's professional, compassionate, and innovative, all the things I look for in a writing teacher.
Kerry's style is warm, supportive, and instructive. She balances the careful nurturing we all need as writers sharing vulnerable parts of ourselves, with thoughtful line-by-line edits. She's a complete package as a writing teacher!
