“We’re living in a binge culture,” says instructor Kate Montgomery. “If we find an author we like, we read their entire backlist. If we discover a show we enjoy, we binge multiple seasons. Publishers and producers, who buy novels and screenplays, understand the demand for this kind of storytelling and are always in the market for new material.”

But how can you break into this market? What goes into creating a page-turning, binge-worthy story that can land a loyal following?

Find out in this fun, fast-paced, three-session class. Through an interactive mix of lecture, discussion, and group and individual writing exercises, you’ll discover how to hook your reader or audience from the beginning and keep them guessing to the end.

In this class, you’ll also learn:

  • The seven essential elements that drive an irresistible story
  • How to reimagine an existing one-off story as a series
  • How to craft a relatable but unpredictable main character
  • The six different types of cliffhangers and how to use them
  • How to drive interest with complex character relationships and subplots
  • How to pace your story for maximum interest and impact
  • How to connect with and pitch to publishers and producers

In a lively and encouraging online environment, you’ll start crafting intriguing characters and storylines right away. You’ll also elevate your writing practice by setting and meeting writing goals, and learn some tricks to help you stay inspired along the way. This class provides course materials you can keep to reference later and students are eligible for the student discount on FinalDraft, a screenwriting software.

Reviews
  • Kate Montgomery was not only warm and inviting, she was 100% prepared, providing stacks of carefully considered handouts while also maintaining a flexibility to follow the rhythm of our group. Her knowledge in the field was undeniable and her enthusiasm for discussing and dissecting students' ideas was balanced by honest notes and critiques. I hope to be signing up for another class of hers soon.

  • Now, this may sound like a cliche, but Kate inspired me to make time in my life for what I really want to do: write stories. And that’s hard, I’m a cynical Eastern European, hard to impress and convince. But now I’m going to spend a couple of hours each week to write something down, and if she’ll invite me I’ll go to all her events and workshops, pitch my story ideas, and do my best to create amazing work. She is incredibly charismatic, and it feels great to be around her. But the whole inspiration part is what makes her a standout teacher.
