“Because I’ve spent so many years as an editor, I can get firmly stuck in the rational,” says instructor Laura Atkins. “My critical voice can stop my writing before I’ve even put pen to page. But I feel fortunate to have discovered creative tools and methods to find the voices of my characters and to understand the stories that sing to my deepest self. The truth is, we all have the capacity to be creative, but many of us have faced voices (external and internal) that shut down those impulses.”
In this one-day class, you will participate in a range of exercises to engage and embolden your creative self. These exercises will include meditation and journaling, as well as experimentation with words, sounds, and artistic media. In this fun and safe environment, you will also complete writing exercises to help you find fresh topics and stories that you couldn’t have come across through more rational approaches. Discussions will give you a chance to further explore your work and to share discoveries with the group.
This workshop is suitable for new and experienced writers in any genre. You will come away with tools to quiet your critical voice and to liberate your creative self.
