Perhaps you’re about to embark on writing a novel—after all, National Novel Writing Month is coming up in November! Or maybe you have a novel in progress, but feel like you could use a little help.
“There’s a lot to keep track of when you write a novel,” says instructor Elaine Beale. “Like all writers of fiction, you need to master scene, description, and dialogue. But novelists also have to create a network of compelling characters, craft a believable plot, and pace their story so readers stay engaged for a couple of hundred pages or more. It’s a real challenge to make all of those elements work.”
In this one-day workshop, Elaine will cover the key aspects of novel writing, providing tips, pointers, and planning tools. There will be in-class exercises to help you master specific elements of novel writing, and a chance to discuss some of the challenges you may encounter, as well as techniques you can use to get your novel done.
Elaine says, “I’ve designed this workshop to help students who are new to novel writing, and for students who may be planning to participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). But it’s also designed for those who may already have several chapters, or even a complete draft under their belt.
Regardless of where students are in the novel-writing process, my goal is to have them leave with concrete tools, tips and techniques that inspire and support them in completing their book.”

I am a big fan of Elaine's classes. She immediately puts the novice at ease and her enthusiastic love of the craft is contagious.
Elaine knows her stuff, obviously, and articulates her insights in an inspiring style. She respects how challenging writing is and accentuates that by constantly providing positive support. She is warm, honest, and helpful for fledgling fiction writers!
Elaine was a fantastic teacher. Supportive, kind, clear, and direct. Her teachings about craft - and the time we spent talking about student projects - were especially helpful.
