Instructor Phil Beauman says, “Before writing for In Living Color, writing the pilot for Nickelodeon’s Cousin Skeeter, and co-writing the first Scary Movie, I began my writing career here in the Bay Area at SFSU, where I learned screenwriting structure from Carl Gottlieb (Jaws, The Jerk), Bob Gale (Back to the Future), and Paul Schrader (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver). Now I’m back to share screenwriting techniques and advice with new screenwriters.”
In this daylong screenwriting class, we’ll go through the nuts and bolts of creating a feature-length screenplay and practice those skills and strategies in focused writing exercises. We'll explore how to create original ideas with original characters as well as how to develop adaptations and true stories. We'll then begin shaping those ideas into working outlines and discuss how to turn those outlines into professional three-act structured feature screenplays.
We’ll discuss breaking into the screenwriting business and what is involved in being a professional screenwriter. You’re encouraged to bring specific questions regarding what’s most important to you, so you’ll be able to get exactly the information you’re looking for in a Q&A format. You’re also invited to come to class with three story ideas that you’d like to brainstorm. “Don’t worry if your ideas are rough!” says Phil. “In a fun and supportive atmosphere, we’ll start with the seeds and go from there.”
