“This full-day class is designed for writers of all levels whose schedule or budget may not allow for a longer commitment,” says instructor Kathy Garlick. “In a quick but powerful workshop, we’ll focus on the most essential elements of creative writing such as voice, character, dialogue and description.”
Writing prompts and reflections on the in-class writing will play an important role in this class. Key concepts will be illustrated through short poems, essays and stories from authors including Raymond Carver, Jhumpa Lahiri and Claudia Rankine. Though the focus of the class will be on creating new work, there will be opportunities for sharing and discussion. Students are encouraged to bring a real-life event or story idea or poem they’ve been thinking about recently.
Kathy says, “By the end of the class, you’ll leave with new writing you’ve produced in class, prompts to inspire continued writing, and resources to guide you along the way.”
*There will be a lunch break for at least 30 minutes during this Saturday class.

Kathy gave us thought provoking prompts and positive feedback that left me feeling very hopeful and inspired with my writing. She shared wonderful examples of others's works and brought up many helpful issues.
I loved this class because it felt very supportive and also informative. I left feeling inspired and excited to keep writing, and signed up for another class right afterward. I love the positive environment created in the Writing Salon, and the focus on stopping your own inner-critic to fully enjoy and embrace the process of writing.
Kathy was nurturing and created a supportive and warm environment. I think everyone felt safe sharing and participating. At the same time, she offered direction and teaching points.
