"If you’re craving some constructive, insightful feedback from a supportive group of fellow writers, it’s time to dip your toe into the workshop," says instructor Steve Mitchel.
Over the course of five weeks, the group will discuss two or three of your drafts (all stages of development are welcome) with an eye toward discovering what resonates. Which characters, scenes and sentences are most engaging? Which ones most effectively advance your narrative and which seem to be at cross purposes with the process of bringing your story to fruition? In addition to the group’s comments, Steve will provide you with written feedback and reading suggestions.
In between class meetings, participants will read two or three classmates’ drafts along with a published story illustrative of various craft elements. Each writing submission will be capped at 20 pages, double-spaced.
Steve says, “Whether you’re struggling to complete your first full draft of a story or gearing up to submit to literary journals or MFA programs, the inspiration and direction you gain from the workshop experience will leave you eager to dive back into your stories.”
*To create an intimate classroom environment and to ensure each student receives ample workshopping time, this class will be capped at 9 participants.

Steve Mitchel was awarded the Crazyhorse Fiction Prize for his story, “Dog People.” His story “The Return of the Capellmeister” was a finalist for LitMag’s Virginia Woolf Award for Short Fiction. He earned a B.A. in political science from Stanford University, a J.D. from Northwestern University and an MFA in fiction writing from the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. He’s led fiction writing workshops throughout the Bay Area and has taught legal writing to law students at Northwestern and U.C. Berkeley.

Steve was terrific: gracious, insightful and balanced. I enjoyed reading stories closely for their literary merit and found the open, forgiving atmosphere encouraging.
