How do you pack a story into 500 words or fewer? In this 3-hour class, you’ll explore the expansive possibilities of the very short story, otherwise known as flash fiction, and begin creating your own compact gem.
“Flash fiction can be genre-crossing and boundless,” says instructor K-Ming Chang, “combining elements of poetry and prose. Together we’ll read flash pieces by writers like Venita Blackburn, Marilyn Chin and Ariel Chu to learn how they break the typical conventions of fiction and build line-by-line energy in their work. We’ll generate new writing using prompts inspired by the readings, striving to shape tiny pieces that contain, break open, and create entire worlds.”
You’ll leave the class with the beginnings of several flash pieces and an invigorated approach to writing. This class welcomes those completely new to the form and those who are already practicing it.
