“Are you sitting on a fantastic story idea for the screen?” asks instructor Kerry Muir. “In Intro to Screenwriting, you'll acquire a veritable toolbox of strategies and exercises, as well as creative inspiration to help set your idea into motion."
In this 5-week class, you'll learn the fundamentals of narrative screenwriting. During class meetings, you’ll analyze scenes from successful screenplays and short video clips. You’ll undertake a variety of writing exercises to get your creativity flowing and to learn how to develop complex, three-dimensional characters and write lean, muscular dialogue that serves, rather than strays from, an overarching story problem. There will be opportunities to share your work-in-progress in a fun, supportive environment. Outside of class, you’ll have optional homework assignments to keep the momentum going, and you’ll be invited to read at least one full-length screenplay.
“By the end of five weeks,” says Kerry, “students will become familiar with the basics of dramatic structure and character development. They will learn how to identify the essential core of their own stories and pull it into clear and sharp focus.”

Kerry's enthusiasm for the content of the class, her use of writing exercises, and the collaborative nature of the class demystified and relaxed the writing experience making it seem so much more accessible and less daunting. I now have the confidence to move forward with my screenplay as well as the tools to write it within the confines of the structure.
Kerry was phenomenal! She truly cares about her students and the work that they produce. She took time outside of class to provide thorough feedback and additional materials for us to review. Most importantly, she cultivated an environment that felt safe and encouraging. I received constructive criticism and support workshopping my screenplay. I am very thankful for Kerry's wisdom, positive energy and time.
Kerry was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of screenwriting. She was really wonderful at getting her ideas across to the class, helping us all understand the layout of the genre. And her feedback and help on the screenplays was fantastic.
