With an installment each season of the year, The Salon Reading Series features readings with our beloved teachers and their students.
Come on out to our San Francisco location on September 7 to hear Writing Salon instructors, Elaine Beale and David Jacobson, read with their two students, Barbara Liepe and Angelica Recierdo.

Elaine Beale has published two novels, the most recent of which, Another Life Altogether, was featured in Oprah Magazine and received praise from the Boston Globe, Lambda Literary, and Publishers Weekly, among others. Elaine was the winner of the 2007 Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange Award and has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. Her latest book is Write for Wellness, a guide to using expressive writing to promote emotional and physical health.
David Jacobson is sole proprietor of Inkflow Communications, which provides writing/editing services and marketing communications consulting to social impact organizations in the areas of youth development, sports/fitness, and DEI efforts. He has self-published Az der Papa (a YA coming-of-age novella), At the Cookout: A White Man’s Journey in Black America (memoir), and The Man Behind the Mask (collaboration with American Ninja Warrior athletes Flip Rodriguez and Noah Kaufman). David’s work is rooted in a journalism career that started at age 15 in 1979 and has included thousands of articles, op-eds, and blogs for his employers and clients.
Barbara Liepe grew up in Eugene, Oregon. Since her childhood, she has been captivated by the natural world and earned her Ph.D. at the University of California, at Berkeley in neurophysiology. She has authored several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and the science fiction/fantasy novel Siona’s Tale, a child’s tale for adults on the deep connections all creatures share. She was also a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Barbara loves to create fictional worlds based on factual biology, as well as explore love, loss, and quantum entanglement. She currently works as a biotechnology sales representative, and she and her husband, Frank, live in Berkeley, California, and have three children and two cats.
Angelica Recierdo is the daughter of Filipino immigrants and grew up on the Jersey Shore. She holds an M.S. in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University and a B.S. in Nursing from Northeastern University. She is pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at Dominican University of California, focusing on poetry. Angelica is also a poetry editor for The Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine. Her poems are often about navigating the body, relationships, and the shared world we inhabit. They have appeared in The Healing Muse, The San Franciscan, Cholla Needles, Tendon, and are forthcoming in the first anthology of Black Bird Bookstore’s Open Mic of Poetry & Prose.
