“Traditional publishing is not for everyone,” says instructor David Jacobson. “In fact, it works best for the 1%--the CEOs and celebrities who get a pass on the gauntlet of finding an agent, then a publisher, not to mention freedom from a grueling editorial process and waiting years for a book to arrive in print.”
For many of the rest of us, self-publishing is a quicker path leading to greater satisfaction. It allows a writer to retain primary control of how, when, and to whom their work is distributed. What might that mean for you? You’ll find out in this 3-hour class led by David, who has self-published three wildly different books, each under unique circumstances.
The class will open with exploration of your writing goals, what you already have in the works, and what’s possible for you through self-publishing. “Maybe you’ve written a memoir and want to share it with your community,” says David, “or you’re in a professional field about which you have things to say. We will focus on the three most common motivations, the 3Ms—making your mark, making memories, and making money.”
The next part of the class will involve a detailed discussion of the nitty-gritty steps toward self-publishing from conception to completion. Topics will include working with trusted early readers, editing and design decisions, selecting a self-publishing service, and seeing the project through to print. At the end of class, you’ll walk away with a roadmap for the rest of your self-publishing journey.
